Back Mountan Historical Association to Present on Hanson’s Amusement Park |
The Back Mountain Historical Association is going to relive the heyday of the popular Harveys Lake attraction, Hanson’s Amusement Park, April 18th from 7-9 p.m. in Lemmond Theater at Walsh Hall, with the assistance of F. Charles Petrillo, author of “Harveys Lake.’’ Petrillo will transport those in attendance back in time through an interactive display of historical photographs and personal reflection.
Hanson’s Amusement Park is the best-remembered feature of an earlier time at Harveys Lake. It began in June 1891 as a picnic ground operated by the Lehigh Valley Railroad. In 1906, the railroad leased the park to John Redington, owner of a hotel in Wilkes-Barre. By 1930, John E. Hanson and Alfred Wintersteen owned the park and built its roller coaster in 1931. In 1935, Mr. Hanson fully acquired the park, although the Wintersteen family continued to own the carousel and dodgem rides. Over time, Donald and Shirley Hanson became owners of the famed park. The roller coaster was last operated in 1980 and the amusement park features were sold at auction in September 1984. |
